Hatha yoga is the physical practice of yoga. This is the form of yoga most familiar in the west, practiced in gyms, yoga studios, hospitals, and senior centers. It seeks to bring the body and mind into balance through a series of postures, breathwork, relaxation and meditation.
The meaning of yoga is union; integration of mind, body, and spirit. Yoga is comprised of eight pathways for bringing the body, mind and spirit into harmony, and hatha yoga is one pathway.
The focus on the breath while practicing postures brings a sense of awareness to the sensations of the body and a natural quieting of the mind. The benefits of yoga include increased flexibility, strength, and balance. The increased awareness of the physical body helps us to pay more attention to our body’s signals and respond accordingly.
Savasana is the relaxation pose which occurs at the end of a class. The practice of yoga postures can release tension and create a deep sense of relaxation. It is important to take the time to allow the body to absorb the changes that have occurred during the yoga class. Students enjoy this posture, relishing the opportunity to relax, let go and totally nurture their bodies.
After an eight week yoga class, students often describe feeling less stressed, more relaxed and notice a difference in their posture. They often speak of receiving positive comments about their mental and physical state from coworkers, family and friends.
It is helpful to remember that Yoga is not competitive and it is appropriate for all body types. It is about an ability to be in the present moment, attentive and aware. Whole Health Fitness strives to assist students in taking Yoga off the mat and into their daily lives through connection with their bodies and breath.
Whole Health Fitness offers the first yoga class free of charge. Subsequent classes are $10 per session.
